Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Career choices are crucial decisions that shape the future prospects of young individuals. In Zungeru Local Government Area of Niger State, the growing presence of digital media has opened new avenues for young people to explore career opportunities beyond the traditional paths of farming or local trades. According to Akinyele and Alabi (2023), digital media platforms like LinkedIn, Twitter, YouTube, and online career webinars are transforming the way young people discover career paths, acquire new skills, and network with potential employers. This study aims to examine how digital media influences the career choices of youth in Zungeru, focusing on the role of social media, educational platforms, and online job boards in expanding career possibilities and providing necessary career guidance.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
In Zungeru, youth unemployment and underemployment remain prevalent, and many young people are still unaware of the wide range of career opportunities available beyond traditional occupations. Although digital media has the potential to inform and guide youth towards more diverse career options, there is limited research on how these platforms are being utilized in Zungeru to shape career choices. This study seeks to fill this gap by exploring the role of digital media in influencing the career decisions of young individuals in the area.
